Cannabis remains prohibited on all Syracuse University property in public or in residence halls or offices (including University-owned and leased buildings, housing and parking lots), and at all campus events or while conducting campus business.
Although the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act of 2021 legalized recreational cannabis use in New York State for individuals over 21, it remains illegal under federal law, the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act. This means that any college or university in the country that receives any federal funds, even those in states that have legalized cannabis use at the state level or where an individual has a medical prescription, cannot permit or allow cannabis use or possession, regardless of age or medical status.
The Student Conduct Code prohibits the use, possession, manufacture, sale, distribution or procurement of any illegal drugs or of paraphernalia used for or intended to be used for the consumption, distribution and/or manufacture of illegal drugs, including facilitation of such behavior. This includes cannabis. Students documented for cannabis-related incidents will be referred to Community Standards for the Student Conduct process and may be assigned sanctions based on the severity of the incident.
Cannabis Harm Reduction
It is illegal to smoke or vape cannabis where smoking/vaping tobacco is prohibited (like restaurant patios or public parks). Please be mindful and considerate of those around you (i.e., do not consume near children or in youth-related spaces).
You will see this symbol on all legal (i.e. regulated) adult-use cannabis products. This symbol is easily recognizable to allow you to quickly tell whether a product contains THC or not.
If someone feels different, they drive different. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal. Be safe and responsible. Make a transportation plan before consuming cannabis.
Licensed cannabis products come in many different forms and potencies (or strengths). Whether someone is new or a frequent cannabis consumer, start low, consuming less than the recommended serving size, and go slow. It may take up to four hours to feel the effects.
Always keep cannabis products locked, out of sight and out of reach to prevent accidental consumption by young people and pets.
