Travel Emergencies

Emergency Contact Information

  • Faculty, staff, and students traveling for University purposes may contact the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224, 24 hours a day, if they experience an emergency while traveling. Callers will be connected with University personnel who can provide advice and support.

Medical Emergencies

  • University travelers experiencing medical distress abroad may contact International SOS (ISOS) at 215.942.8226 or toll free at 1.800.523.6586. ISOS will provide information on the nearest medical facility able to provide adequate care.  University support may be reached by contacting the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224, 24 hours a day.
  • Students traveling who experience a mental health issue are advised to contact International SOS (ISOS) at 215.942.8226 or toll free at 1.800.523.6586 for a referral to appropriate support as near to their location as possible. The Syracuse University Counseling Center can provide limited crisis support at 315.443.4715.

Security Emergencies

  • University travelers that become concerned for their physical safety abroad may contact International SOS (ISOS) at 215.942.8226 or toll free at 1.800.523.6586 for advice and support. University support may be reached by contacting the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224, 24 hours a day.

Arrest and Detention

  • University travelers abroad facing arrest or detention may receive referral to local legal advice by contacting International SOS (ISOS) at 215.942.8226 or toll free at 1.800.523.6586. Additionally, travelers who are US citizens are advised to ask to speak to a representative from American Citizen Services (ACS) located at any US embassy or consulate abroad.  An ACS representative will work to ensure that any detained American citizen is treated fairly.  Additionally, they can provide a vetted list of local legal counsel.   University travelers who are not citizens of the United States are advised to seek support from their respective embassies.

Information for Victims of Crime

  • US citizens who are victims of crime abroad are advised to notify American Citizen Services at the nearest US embassy or consulate. ACS will take steps to refer victims to appropriate support and, if warranted, notify other travelers in the area of potential risks.  University travelers who are not citizens of the United States are advised to consult with a representative of their home country’s embassy.
  • Additionally, travelers may access available University support systems including the Sexual and Relationship Violence Response Team at 315.443.4715.
  • Emergency support from the University may be accessed by calling the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224, 24 hours a day.
