On a case-by-case basis, attorneys will advise students on a variety of legal problems. Examples include review of housing leases and other contracts, advise and, in certain cases, represent students on University disciplinary matters, and prepare legal documents (e.g. Wills, Power of Attorney Forms, Separation Agreements).
Within Onondaga County, examples include traffic moving violations, misdemeanors and certain felonies, landlord and tenant disputes, consumer matters, negligence suits, and matrimonial and family law matters.
Outside of Onondaga County, or if it is a matter not covered under Student Legal Services, even though the team cannot represent students, they will still advise students of their rights and options. The team may also be able to refer students to another person, service or agency that can assist.
Student Legal Services does not represent students in certain cases, including but not limited to: business, commercial, real estate or income generating matters, copyright, patent, incorporation, immigration, bankruptcy, probate, contested matrimonials, public assistance, tax matters, parking and no-point tickets, Class A, B and non-drug Class C felonies, court cases outside of Onondaga County, campus organizations except for their sponsoring organizations, estate planning, complex wills, students involved in mass political or riotous situations, cases where a student is the Plaintiff, contingent fee cases and cases where there is a conflict of interest.
Even though the team cannot represent students in these cases, they will still advise students of their rights and options. The team will also refer students to another person, service or agency that can assist whenever possible.
Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) full-time undergraduate students and full-time or part-time graduate students paying the full-time activities fee are entitled to free legal advice and, in certain situations, court representation. Not sure if you qualify? Just ask!
Eligible students will be responsible for any out-of-pocket expenses such as court fines and fees, in addition to outside charges from other organizations needed in order to successfully represent the case.
