We know your Orange pride runs deep. When your club wants to share your school spirit with the world, this guide will help you understand the ways you can use Syracuse University trademarks to celebrate and show your pride.

The following guide defines permissible use of University trademarks for Club Sports registered with Competitive Club Sports and Esports only. If your organization is not currently recognized by the Student Experience division as a registered Club Sport, you are not authorized nor permitted to use University trademarks. Remember, prior approval is always required before using University trademarks.

Club Sport Trademark Usage Guidelines

In addition to reviewing the guidelines below, Club Sports should also review the Club Sport Handbook for additional information about trademarks, logos, purchasing, marketing and promotion. The Office of Trademark Licensing also provides information on approved licensees and vendors.

As a reminder, University trademarks cannot be used without permission from the University through an approval process, consistent with legal requirements that trademark holders (like the University) prevent unauthorized or unlicensed use of such trademarks. University trademarks also cannot be used in a manner that violates the Student Conduct Code. Syracuse University retains the right to modify trademark guidelines and to deny use of its trademarks at any time.

Recreational, competitive or instructional Club Sports recognized by Competitive Club Sports and Esports often represent the University in their respective sport on the local, state, regional or national level.  To showcase their Syracuse University club team status and affiliation with the University, Club Sports may use the following University trademarks:

Additional Guidelines for Using University Trademarks

  • When using University institutional trademarks: Please adhere to the Syracuse University Brand Guidelines.
  • When using the University amplified Block S trademark: Please use your approved customized amplified Block S logo and adhere to the Club Sport Branding Guidelines. Club Sports can access their Block S logos on the Club Sports Logo page.
  • When using the Otto the Orange trademark: Please adhere to the Club Sport Branding Guidelines. Club Sports are permitted to add artwork to the Otto trademark in the form of sport-related equipment, such as a hockey stick or tennis racket, in Otto’s hands. The Otto trademark itself cannot be modified, such as removing Otto’s hat or placing text or images over Otto’s body.
  • Club Sports may use University trademarks in domain names for team websites so long as the “club” designation is included (e.g., cuseclubsoccer.com).
  • Logos or marks of third-party sponsors of Club Sport teams must be separated from all Syracuse University marks, such as on the back or sleeve of apparel.
  •  Syracuse University trademarks may only be used by the Club Sport in conjunction with typical Club Sport activities true to the pursuit of their athletic endeavors, such as promoting membership, tryouts and upcoming competitions or fundraising to support the Club Sport team only. Syracuse University trademarks cannot be used in conjunction with fundraising or promotion of external entities or causes.

Additional Guidelines for Club Sport Materials

  • All Club Sport teams must include “club” designation on all materials.
  • All Club Sport team materials must show affiliation with Syracuse University. This can be in the form of using a University trademark or adding the word “University.”
  • Club Sport teams are permitted to create and use their own team logos (referred to as self-created logos).
  • Self-created logos cannot incorporate University trademarks or artwork that resembles University trademarks into the design.
  • Self-created logos cannot incorporate abbreviation of “SU.”
  • Club Sport materials cannot include depictions of Otto-like characters (i.e., personified orange fruit with gloves, boots, face and hat).

Approval Process

If you are a recognized Club Sport with Competitive Club Sports and Esports, please email your request to use trademarks to Chris Jones. Please include designs and use cases when submitting your request.  Your submission will be reviewed and you will be notified of an approval, required changes or denial with reason. Please note, until you receive approval from Competitive Club Sports and Esports, you cannot proceed with use of trademarks.
