Community Standards recognizes that student organizations experience regular turnover in membership and leadership, and that this natural change presents an opportunity to demonstrate real progress in organizational culture. Social Probation is designed to promote lasting behavioral change, and this petition process allows organizations to show that such change has taken root under new leadership.
Student organizations on a status of Social Probation for two or more semesters may petition Community Standards for reconsideration of their status. Details are below.
Eligibility and Requirements
Organizations on Social Probation for more than two academic semesters may petition Community Standards for a reduction in their status if they meet all of the following:
- The organization has completed at least half of its probationary period without further violations.
- All other assigned sanctions have been completed by Community Standards’ established deadlines.
- Organization leadership has submitted a detailed accountability plan outlining steps taken and planned to ensure member accountability.
- Leadership has submitted a detailed risk management plan outlining steps taken and planned to mitigate risk at future social functions.
- Organization leadership has submitted a written statement describing what they have learned since the incident that led to probation and how the organization plans to positively contribute to the Syracuse University community if probation is lifted.
- The organization’s campus advisor has submitted a letter of support for the status change.
- An up-to-date membership roster has been submitted, including names, SUIDs, and contact information.
Organizations with sanctions due after submitting this petition (for example, community service) may still submit it. However, failing to complete assigned sanctions on time may result in reinstatement of Social Probation and will make the organization ineligible for further reconsideration.
This reconsideration process applies only to Social Probation and does not extend to other statuses imposed by Community Standards, Student Engagement, Student Association, or any Greek Lettered Council (IFC, PanHel, NALFO, MGC, NPHC, or PFC), such as Conduct Probation.
Incomplete petitions will not be reviewed. The Director of Community Standards, the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Development, and/or the Director of Competitive Club Sports will review all requests and may consult with organization advisors and/or national headquarters as appropriate.
If a petition is approved, the Director of Community Standards, the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Development, and/or the Director of Competitive Club Sports may impose additional conditions as deemed appropriate.
