Part 5. Health and Safety Inspections

Consistent with the Terms and Conditions, Right of Entry, Student Living will conduct periodic health and safety inspections of residential units. While not required, Student Living will attempt to announce dates of inspections in advance. Inspections will be scheduled to occur during reasonable hours to not significantly interfere with sleep and study. At times where emergency, safety, or security conditions are present, such notice may be impractical and is specifically waived. For safety and security, Student Living may be accompanied by other University personnel during an announced or unannounced inspection.

All Inspections: This is a plain view search. SL staff will not open drawers or closets. SL staff may need to move and/or look under and/or behind furniture in order to check for safety concerns and visibly check electrical outlets. If any prohibited items are observed in plain view or visibly protruding from open drawers/closets, the prohibited items will be confiscated. Items confiscated by SL will be discarded/disposed of and will not be returned (see Prohibited Item Policy). A copy of the inspection summary will be left in your room/emailed to you. If there are any alleged policy violations, you will receive separate communication regarding the resolution of the alleged violations from either Community Standards or Student Living. You do not need to be present for the inspection.

Residence Hall Inspections: Student Living (SL) staff will be performing health and safety inspections of all residence hall rooms at some point during the month of November 2021 for fall and March/April 2022 for spring. We are providing this advance notice to you as a courtesy as such notice is not required (see Terms and Conditions of Housing, Right of Entry). Inspections will occur at reasonable times of the day so as to have minimal impact on sleep and study, typically between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

South Campus Apartment Inspections: Inspections occur throughout the academic year. Residents are notified via email at the beginning of the month for which their apartment is scheduled to be inspected. Inspections typically occur between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
