Staff in Syracuse Abroad, Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services and Student Living, are dedicated to supporting students before and returning from studying abroad.
Preparing to Study Abroad
When planning and preparing to study abroad, students are encouraged to plan and take action early. It’s important to understand the differing needs that a fall semester vs. a spring semester abroad may present. Questions for students to reflect upon include but are not limited to the following:
- If abroad for a fall semester, students may need living accommodations for the spring semester after they return.
- If traveling abroad in a spring semester, students may need living accommodations for the fall semester prior to going abroad.
Yes, students are responsible for confirming and taking action to reserve/lease any needed living accommodations for the semester in which they are not studying abroad. Campus staff in Syracuse Abroad, Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services and Student Living, are here to help navigate the process.
This decision is a personal one involving a combination of personal preferences, as well as availability of spaces both on and off campus. First-year and second-year undergraduate students must live on campus, unless a prior exemption has been granted.
Living On-Campus and Studying Abroad
- Students seeking to live on campus the fall semester before they study abroad in the spring semester are asked to participate in the Academic Year Room Selection Process.
- Students living on-campus who are studying abroad for the spring semester may cancel their on-campus housing assignment to pursue a study abroad experience. Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services emails (@syr.edu) eligible students sharing instructions on how to cancel their housing assignment, cancel meal plans and vacate their housing assignment at the end of the fall semester.
- For questions and to learn more, please contact Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services.
- Students seeking to live on campus the spring semester after studying abroad in the fall semester are asked to not participate in the Academic Year Room Selection Process. Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services will email (@syr.edu) eligible students sharing a different application for students to complete and express interest in a spring semester only housing assignment. The spring semester application is made available in October.
- Upon completion of the form, students will receive notice via email (@syr.edu) if they have received a spring semester housing assignment. An assignment is not guaranteed, although every effort is made to accommodate students making such requests.
- For questions and to learn more, please contact Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services.
Living Off-Campus and Studying Abroad
The Off-Campus Student Living team serves as a resource for students thinking about and currently living off campus.
Students are encouraged to have the lease reviewed by an attorney prior to signing. Undergraduate students have access to Student Legal Services as part of their Student Fee. More information is available on the Lease Signing Process webpage.
The Housing Search webpage offers more information, including the Off-Campus Housing Search website.
Yes, if class year eligible students (i.e., juniors, seniors, first-years or sophomores with an approved exemption) have selected to live off campus, they are responsible for understanding the responsibilities of this choice and if needed, taking action to prepare for what will happen to the leased space while studying abroad.
Prior to signing a lease, it is encouraged that students understand and review the lease with study abroad top of mind. For example, what will happen to the leased space when away for a semester? Does the lease permit the student to sublet the unit while away or are they responsible for paying the lease even when studying abroad? Additional information is available on the Lease Signing Process webpage.
Not all lease agreements permit a sublease. Before signing, students are encouraged to review the lease to learn if subletting is an option. Students may wish to consult an attorney prior to signing. Students should never attempt to draft the terms of a sublease themselves. Always work with an attorney to ensure the terms and conditions are properly written. Undergraduate students have access to Student Legal Services as part of their Student Fee. More information is available on the Lease Signing Process webpage.
Student Living has partnered with College Pads to provide a comprehensive off-campus housing website. Additionally, this website hosts opportunities for Syracuse University students to post needs for and explore available subleases and roommates. Please note there may be additional resources that are operated by third-parties and not affiliated with Syracuse University. Students are also encouraged to network within friend groups, student organizations and on student Facebook groups, as many students select to study abroad in the fall and others who study abroad in the spring, thus providing options each semester.
