South Campus at Syracuse University is home to approximately 2,500 students, including 50% of second-year students, who live in apartment-style housing and our Skyhalls residence hall complex.  A short distance from North Campus, South Campus is also home to the Goldstein Student Center, Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, the Softball Stadium, Outdoor Challenge Course, and numerous outdoor spaces.

South Campus Living

Through services, resources and events, the Apartment and Off-Campus Living team, along with South Campus Community Ambassadors, offer dedicated support that prioritizes student independence. Program development and promotion focuses on experiences that impact students’ sense of belonging, community engagement and personal responsibility/self-reliance.

New fire pits were installed in five locations throughout South Campus prior to fall 2022. Instructions for their use are posted at each location and are also detailed below. Our hope is that these can be places where community members can gather, relax, and build connections with each other.  Please take appropriate care of the fire pits and the provided furniture so these can remain a part of your community experience. You will find fire pits in the following locations:

  • Behind Goldstein Student Center, next to the volleyball courts
  • Next to 301 Slocum Heights
  • Next to 241 Slocum Heights
  • Behind 155 Small Road (still being installed)
  • Behind 321 Chinook Drive (still being installed)

Instructions for Fire Pit Use

Using the Fire Pit

  • The dial serves as the on/off switch.
  • Turn the dial to the desired amount of time (0-60 minutes).
  • The fire pit will automatically shut off after 60 minutes.
  • If you leave before your time is complete, turn the dial to zero to shut the fire off.
  • DO NOT block the two (2) air vents on the fire pits.
  • The fire pit MUST be turned off when you leave.

Fire Pit Guidelines

  • Operational Hours: 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. (available on a first-come, first-served basis).
  • In the event of a fire pit-related emergency, including the smell of gas, push the emergency shut off button if possible and immediate call 711 (Fire Life Safety) or 315.443.2224 (Public Safety).
  • Please contact Student Living for a NON-EMERGENCY need (315.443.3893).
  • Prior to use, make sure surrounding areas are free from any potentially flammable items or debris.
  • All combustible materials must be kept at least 36″ away from the fire pit.
  • A 5# ABC fire extinguisher is provided at each fire pit – please become familiar with its location.
  • Fire and Life Safety Services retain the right to prohibit the use of a fire pit due to improper use or due to weather conditions not conducive to open burn.
  • The fire pit and the surrounding surfaces are extremely hot. Do not touch or place anything near or on the fire pit.
  • Do not leave an open flame unattended.
  • The fire pit may NEVER be used for any food heating or cooking.

Furniture

The provided furniture is not to be removed from the fire pit area.

We know that many of our students are approved to have dogs as emotional support animals and that dogs need exercise to be healthy. To support the canine members of our community, a new dog park was installed prior to fall 2022 on Winding Ridge, across from apartment #210. The park is open and available for your dog’s use. When your dog is in the park, you need to remain on site with your pet. Please be sure to close the gates when entering and exiting the park. A receptacle and waste bags are located in the park. Please clean up after your pet so the park remains in good condition for all dogs in our community.

If you have not noticed, deer are plentiful on and around South Campus. When driving through the area, please look not only for pedestrians but for deer as well. They can run and appear in front of your vehicle very quickly. Drive safely and follow all posted road and speed limit signs.

We want your independent living experience to be rewarding. However, food insecurity can make living on your own challenging. The University maintains two Food Pantries on-campus. The main panty is located in Hendricks Chapel. A secondary pantry is located in the Carriage House on South Campus.

If you are in need of groceries or would like to donate, please visit one of the pantries. Hours for each of them can be found on the Food Pantry website.

Dumpsters for trash and recycling are located near all apartment buildings and are labeled as trash and recycling. Please take your trash and recycling out to your nearest dumpster on a regular basis and use the proper dumpster for your waste. Doing so will help keep your apartment clean and lessen the attraction for bugs or rodents to enter your space.

The Orange Safe app provides users a variety of functions, including an immediate connection to DPS, access to campus safety notifications, and the ability to have a friend watch you move across campus in real time.

The start of the semester is also a good time to start smart safety practices, such as walking in groups and always locking your apartment door. Learn more about safety strategies you can take to help ensure your safety.

You may have found living agreements to be a helpful resource to you when you lived in a residence hall with a new roommate. They can be helpful for you when living in an apartment as well. The living agreement process provides a space for you and your roommate(s) to discuss and set expectations for your shared living space this year. Some topics of conversation could include communication strategies, guest/visitor preferences, cleaning expectations, safety precautions, sleeping environment, and study habits, among other things. Start your semester off with open communication about how you will live together successfully.

Complete Your Living Agreement

Student Living, under the direction of Fire and Life Safety Services, conducts periodic health and safety inspections in all South Campus apartments. Students will receive an email approximate two to three weeks prior to their apartment’s scheduled inspection. Learn more about the inspections.

E-scooters and E-bikes are popular modes of transportation around Syracuse University. It is important to follow safe practices when using these items as they do pose some fire safety dangers.  Always use the manufacturer’s approved charger, do not overcharge the battery, and do not cover the battery or charger while charging. If not followed, all of these could lead to overheating or even a fire. If you have any questions on safe use of an e-scooter or e-bike, please contact Fire and Life Safety Services.

Contact Apartment and Off-Campus Student Living
