Returning to Syracuse University from an extended forced absence is a time when a student may be anxious, scared, nervous, angry, and excited all at the same time. Requesting to return to campus to complete a degree is a difficult decision, yet it should be one of which a student is proud. The time away is designed to provide students with opportunities for self-reflection and growth. It is our hope that when a student returns, they are stronger and are prepared to complete their studies successfully.
In order to return, you are required to complete and submit a Good Citizenship Petition. Requirements of a Good Citizenship Petition may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- A Personal Statement.
- Evidence of Academic Progress, Gainful Employment, and/or Community Service during your time away from Syracuse University.
- Official Transcript from any institution you may have attended; and/or,
paystub and/or a letter on company letterhead which clearly verifies your dates of employment and the scope of your work. - Completion of an Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Program to the satisfaction of the Barnes Center at the Arch, Counseling staff.
- Completion of an Anger Management Program to the satisfaction of the Barnes Center at the Arch, Counseling staff.
- Completion of a safe driving course and/or victim impact panel.
- Research Project regarding specific topics related to the incident that resulted in suspension.
- Evidence of court case disposition.
The specific requirements for your Good Citizenship Petition are outlined in a student’s suspension outcome letter from Community Standards. A student should review that letter to verify the information that they must complete and submit with their petition.
Petitions should be submitted according to the date in your suspension outcome letter. After the Petition submission date has passed, a Petition will be reviewed in the order it was received. Students will receive email communications regarding their status and whether any information is missing.

Good Citizenship Petition Review
After our office receives all of a student’s petition components, they will receive a confirmation via email. Petitions will only be reviewed once all of the components have been submitted and only after a student’s “Eligible to Return Date”, which is outlined in their suspension notice.
All petitions are reviewed by the Director of Community Standards and the Dean of Students. Students will be notified whether and under what conditions the University is prepared to support their return.
All clearance to return letters contain a list of campus resources to assist a student in their re-enrollment, which includes contact information for on and off-campus housing.
Student Outreach and Support can assist a student in the re-enrollment/readmission process. Please note that on-campus housing and re-enrollment in Syracuse University courses cannot occur until a student has received a clearance to return letter.
