When Community Standards receives a report that a student and/or registered student organization has allegedly violated the Student Conduct Code and more information is needed, an investigation may be initiated.
The Investigator may contact individuals who may have knowledge about the situation. If you are asked to participate, you will receive an email communication to your SYR email that you have been scheduled for an investigation interview.
Students should carefully review the letter they receive, which includes a brief summary of why a student has been called in for an investigation interview, the investigation process, Procedural Advisors, and how to request disability accommodation.
Students may bring a Procedural Advisor for support; however, an investigation interview will not be rescheduled based on their availability. A student who fails to attend their investigation interview meeting may result in disciplinary action.
At the start of the interview, the Investigator will explain your rights and remind you that participation is voluntary. You can choose what to share during the meeting, and if you participate, your input will be included in the investigation report. At the conclusion of the investigation, the Investigator will provide you a written summary of what you shared. You will have at least two business days to review this summary and provide feedback before it is finalized.
The Investigator will send a Closed Investigation Notice informing the student/organization or the outcome of the investigation.
There are two possible outcomes from an investigation:
- A student/organization is referred to the Student Conduct Process based on a preponderance of evidence discovered in the investigation.
- A student/organization is not referred to the Student Conduct Process, and the matter is considered closed.
If a student/organization is referred to the student conduct process, the Closed Investigation Notice will inform the student/organization of that process. Please refer to Part 7 of the Student Conduct System Handbook for the Resolution by Agreement process.
Audio or video recordings are not allowed during investigation interviews. However, you may take written notes. For more details about the process and your rights, you can review the Student Conduct Handbook.
