New York Fashion Week (NYFW) Fall/Winter 2026 delivered all the drama and statement details, but don’t let the runway intimidate you. According to Coveteur’s trend roundup, this season is all about bringing old trends back: bold shoulders, ruffles, brooches, reds and lots of layers. The good news? Every single one of these trends can work with a college student budget. Here’s how to make the Einhorn Family Walk feel like the runway.
Big Shoulders, Bigger Energy
Shoulder pads are so back. Designers leaned into structured, broad-shouldered shapes this season, giving blazers, coats and knitwear a vintage shape. Instead of buying something brand new, thrift an over-sized blazer or borrow one from your parents’ closet. Pair it with straight-leg jeans and sneakers for a look that says, “I have a presentation at 2 p.m.” but also, “I know what’s trending.” Pro tip: rolling the sleeves keeps it casual for class.
Ruffles, But Make It Subtle
Ruffles were all over the runaway, taking inspiration from historical fashion. While a full ruffled collar might feel like a lot for an 8 a.m. class, you can nod to the trend with a blouse that has soft ruffle trim or a textured scarf layered under a coat. Even a flowy skirt with a little movement gives that same energy without doing too much!
Brooches Are Back
Yes, brooches. Statement pins were styled over ties and knitwear on the runway, and honestly? This is the easiest trend to try! Add a vintage brooch to a thrifted blazer, clip one onto your tote strap or your beanie, or pin it onto a sweater for instant personality. It’s affordable, sustainable and adds a fun touch to every outfit!
Roses Are Red…
Red was a star this NYFW, and fall/winter is the perfect time to embrace it. Try a red knit sweater, a bold scarf or even cherry-toned sneakers to brighten up neutral winter layers. On gray Syracuse days, a pop of red genuinely changes the vibe!
Layer, Layer and Layer Some More
Layering was a major theme: think capes, draped coats and scarves. This is nothing new to us Syracuse students, since we’re used to layering for the transition between frigid walks to class and the blasting heat of campus buildings. Try wearing a hoodie under a long coat. Add a sweater vest over a long sleeve. Tie a scarf in a way that feels styled, not just warm. The key is intention. When layers look deliberate, the outfit instantly feels elevated!
These 2026 trends are great ways to elevate your current wardrobe and boost your creativity. Most of these looks can be thrifted, layered or remixed from what’s already in your closet. Just because Fashion Week happens in the Big Apple doesn’t mean the trends can’t make it to Orange Nation!
