But no one’s going to tell you what you might not be prepared for.

1. FOMO is real.

If you don’t know, FOMO means “fear of missing out.” Even though you’re on your own incredible adventure, it’s going to feel weird seeing a picture or video of all your friends hanging out without you. You’re going to want to be home making memories with them. If this happens, just take a deep breath and remember where you are and that you’ll be home with them in the blink of an eye.

2. Classes are different.

Even if you’re taking classes at an SU Center, chances are your professor is a native of the country. Meaning, there’s a good chance they teach with a different style than you’re used to. It might take some adapting to get used to, but you’ll come out of it a stronger learner.

3. Living with a host family takes some adjusting.

This one isn’t applicable for all programs but, it’s going to feel a little strange moving in with a family. You’ve already experienced the freedom that comes with living by yourself at SU and now you’re back with a family who doesn’t necessarily love when you make Ramen at 3 a.m. As long as you’re open and communicative with your family, you’ll find a way to operate that ensures everyone’s happy. Living with a host family is often the highest rated part of students’ time abroad!

4. Budgeting is hard when traveling independently.

Each time you take a trip, chances are that you want to indulge and buy all the expensive, local food. You’re only there once right? One piece of advice: buy one or two big meals out and cook/make the rest of your meals in your hostel or Airbnb. Plus, going to the grocery store is a great way to learn the culture!

If you’re thinking of studying abroad, don’t let these stand in your way!
