The semester’s workload is finally starting to wind down, but our responsibilities aren’t through just yet! Whether you live on or off campus, this time of year is about balancing fun with awareness. We made a checklist to ensure you finish the semester on a safe and positive note.

Take Care of Yourself

We know you hear it all the time, but seriously! After the long Syracuse winter, summer weather can feel like a big adjustment. Make sure you drink water, wear sunscreen (and reapply it!) and eat something besides snacks and iced coffee.

Yes, the sun may be out, but summer storms can still roll in fast! Make sure your Orange Alert contact info is updated so you’re not caught off guard by severe weather while you’re out for a walk or sunbathing on the Quad.

Don’t forget to protect your personal health, too! Before heading into summer break, take a few minutes to plan ahead and take advantage of the health and wellness resources here on campus, whether that means picking up or ordering safer sex supplies, scheduling a routine test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or connecting with the Pharmacy to make sure you’re set with any prescriptions for the months ahead. You can learn more about all these resources and more on the Barnes Center at the Arch’s website.

Lastly, protect your (and campus’s) peace: if you see or experience something disruptive, report it. This includes conduct concerns, bias incidents, hazing or other harmful situations. Creating a safe and respectful environment benefits everyone!

Be Mindful of Your Space and Your Community

On-Campus Residents

If you live in a campus residence hall or apartment, your space comes with shared responsibility, including your guests. You are responsible for their behavior, so be mindful of who you’re bringing in and avoid letting unfamiliar people into residential buildings or your living area.

Be aware of your noise and routine, night owls, especially as finals approach! Quiet Hours are currently in effect from midnight- 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 1-8 a.m. Friday and Saturday. 24-hour Quiet Hours for finals will begin at 9 p.m. on Monday, April 27, and continue through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6.

If something in your residence hall feels off (think broken locks, lighting issues or other safety concerns), report it. Maintenance keeps your living environment comfortable for everyone; you have enough to deal with already, so let them help you!

And finally, before you move out of your residence hall, make sure you review deadlines and follow all the instructions shared in an email sent to your Syracuse University email inbox on April 7. Planning now will save you loads of last-minute stress!

Off-Campus Residents

If you’re living off-campus, you’ve got responsibilities, too! As the semester ends, continue to be respectful and considerate of your roommates and your neighbors, whether those neighbors be fellow students or members of the broader Syracuse community. Be aware that your actions and noise levels impact those around your property. Remember that everyone needs to be able to sleep and study for school or get ready for work!

As you prepare to move out of your off-campus residence, make sure to check your lease requirements for what the expectations are prior to move-out. Most landlords will expect your apartment to be cleaned and for trash to be removed. For more information and helpful tips on moving out of an off-campus property, check out the Residential Living website.

Look Out for Your People

You probably have lots of fun plans with your friends before you split up for the summer, but staying aware is just as important as having fun!

Whenever you’re out and about, make sure to stay with your group, keep track of your friends and never leave someone behind, especially if they may need help. Looking out for each other is one of the easiest ways to keep everyone safe! The golden rule you’ve heard since you were five years old still counts—always treat others the way you want to be treated.

It’s also important to recognize the warning signs of alcohol poisoning and know how to respond if you see it. Noticing C.U.P.S. and taking C.A.R.E can help you know what to look for and what steps to take in an emergency. If something feels off, trust your gut and step in if you can. If not, get help. You should also be able to recognize the signs of an overdose and know how to respond. Narcan training saves lives and is available through the Barnes Center.

Remember, the University’s Medical Amnesty Policy exists to support you, not get you in trouble. If someone needs help in a situation involving alcohol or other drugs, don’t hesitate to call. Never risk someone’s safety over fear of getting in trouble!

Help Is Here for You

If something feels off or unsafe, don’t hesitate to get help. You’re not expected to handle every situation on your own, especially if you don’t feel comfortable or can’t safely step in. Syracuse University resources have your back.

If there is an immediate threat or life-threatening emergency, call 911.

For 24/7 campus support, call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 315.443.2224, dial #78 on a cell phone or 711 from a campus landline. You can also download the Orange Safe app for quick access to safety resources; this includes safety escort services, location sharing, tip reporting and direct communication with DPS, with options to remain anonymous. Whichever way you choose to reach out, you’ve got someone looking out for you!

If you’re looking for support beyond immediate safety concerns, the Barnes Center is also available 24/7 through their support line. Whether you’re experiencing a mental health crisis, seeking support for sexual assault or relationship violence, or have an urgent medical concern, you can call 315.443.8000 for free, around-the-clock, confidential care. If what you’re experiencing is not urgent, you can always connect during regular business hours.

You’ve made it almost all the way through the 2025-26 academic year, so end it on a high note! Take care of yourself, look out for each other and enjoy these last few weeks safely. Finish strong, Syracuse!

Written By Julia Seitz G’26, S.I.
