Making sure you exercise caution and promote healthy activities is key to a relaxing, memorable break.

Stock up on Sexual Health Supplies

If you’re planning on being sexually active during spring break, practicing safer sex is essential. Even if you’re not planning to be sexually active, keeping safer sex supplies for friends or just in case is always a good idea. The Barnes Center at The Arch has a full Safer Sex Supplies service free for students to use to stock up on sexual health supplies, including external condoms, internal condoms, dental dams, lubricant and hand protection. You can either walk into the Barnes Center and visit the Safer Sex Supplies Station yourself, or you can place an order online. Orders can be delivered to any residence hall mailbox, or you can schedule your order for pickup from the Barnes Center or the Goldstein Student Center on South Campus.

Along with sexual health supplies, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are also available at the Barnes Center. Additionally, you can discuss contraceptive and pregnancy prevention options with Barnes Center health care providers. Taking necessary steps to ensure you are practicing safer sex is an important part of your holistic health and is available right here on campus!

If Drinking, Practice Moderation and Regulation

If you choose to drink, pacing yourself and drinking as safely as possible is important. Only have one standard drink per hour and drink at least one glass of water per alcoholic drink to slow the release of alcohol into your bloodstream. Additionally, eat protein and carbohydrates before drinking for the same reason. This will help prevent hangovers, alcohol poisoning and dehydration from alcohol.

Most importantly, make sure you don’t have too much to drink. For women, more than three drinks in a day or more than seven drinks a week is considered “heavy drinking,” and for men, “heavy drinking” means more than four drinks in a day or more than 14 drinks in a week. Too much alcohol can be permanently damaging to your body, so be mindful.

Additionally, if you’re vacationing in a place you might not know very well, making sure you’re staying cautious and vigilant is important. Make sure to stay with your friends and that you know how to get back to wherever you’re staying. This is very important to ensure you can have fun safely!

Notice C.U.P.S. and Take C.A.R.E.

Think someone has had too much to drink? Look for C.U.P.S.—the acronym the Barnes Center provides to notice signs of alcohol poisoning. It stands for:

C – Cold Skin

U – Unconscious

P – Puking

S – Slow Breathing

If you notice these symptoms in someone, take C.A.R.E. and follow these steps:

C – Call for help right away.

A – Angle the person on their side.

R – Remain with the person until help arrives.

E – Empowered by the University’s Medical Amnesty Policy, both the student who calls for help and the student receiving medical assistance can take action without fear of judgment, as cooperating students are often not referred for a disciplinary process with Community Standards.

Remember, the Medical Amnesty Policy only applies when you’re on campus and using campus resources. Despite this, “Notice C.U.P.S.? and C.A.R.E!” serves as a reminder of what to do when someone appears to have drank too much, which is always helpful!

If Traveling to Warmer Places, Plan Accordingly

If you’re going on a beach vacation, first of all, I’m jealous! Second, make sure you’re taking proper precautions to stay healthy. Wear sunscreen, even if you think you’ll only be in the sun for a little while. Make sure to drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Lastly, don’t stay out in the sun for too long! We may not have to worry about it much in Syracuse, but avoiding prolonged sun exposure and damage is important to your health and avoiding sun poisoning.

Taking care of yourself and others while enjoying spring break is important. Safety tips don’t have to make the trip boring! Just make sure to keep these things in mind while you’re having fun so your trip doesn’t take any wrong turns.

Written by Mirren Grimason ’29, S.I.
