This February marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month in the United States. To recognize the milestone, the Intercultural Collective and the Black History Month Planning Committee have planned a month-long lineup of events<\/a> for the Syracuse University community celebrating the traditions shaped by African Americans and members of the Black diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme,\u00a0\u201cA Century of Black History Commemoration,\u201d honors the past 100 years while highlighting the continued importance of uplifting Black voices on campus and beyond. Through collaborations with departments and student organizations across the University, all are welcome to attend events throughout the month to learn, connect and get involved. Explore the\u00a0full calendar of events<\/a>, and read on for some highlights of the month!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slide and Vibe: A Line Dance Experience<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Join Belonging and Student Success in the Women\u2019s Building Dance Studio at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, for a high\u2011energy line dancing workshop that takes you on a journey through the dances that shaped generations. From the classic two-step to modern favorites like the Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle, you\u2019ll learn iconic moves that have brought people together for decades. Whether you\u2019re a beginner or a seasoned dancer, you\u2019ll have fun, meet new people and leave with steps you can use at any party or celebration!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career Mixer<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Students are invited to attend a Career Mixer on Wednesday, Feb. 11, hosted by Career Services and the Student Government Association. The mixer will give students the opportunity to network, explore different career paths and hear an inspirational testimony from Syracuse\u2019s first Black mayor, Sharon Owens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Department of African American Studies Showcase and Student Mixer<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In celebration of African Americans and the global Black community, the Student Government Association, the Department of African American Studies (AAS) and the Black History Month Planning Committee are co-hosting an AAS Showcase and Student Mixer on Thursday, Feb. 19. Students, faculty and staff are invited to stop by, mingle and enjoy refreshments together. The event will take place on Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. in 331 Sims Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing Celebration<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Black History Month Planning Committee will host its annual closing celebration in collaboration with University Union to wrap up the month in a big way. The night will feature high-energy performances from student organizations and a surprise celebrity guest. The campus community is invited to come celebrate together and enjoy catered food representing a range of Black culture. It\u2019s a celebration you won\u2019t want to miss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
