Getting together with friends over good food and fall vibes sounds like a perfect day to me! However, the idea of throwing together a feast for all and hosting a big group of people can feel very daunting, especially as a college student on a budget. But don’t worry! Read on to learn how you can host a fun, low-key Friendsgiving for you and your friends.

Sending Out Your Invites

A cute invite is the best way to set the tone for your upcoming event. Get on Canva, find the perfect fall design template, fill in the details and you’re good to go! No need to print it out—who has the time for that? Just save it to your phone and send it to your group chat. Easy-peasy!

Finding a Space To Host

For students living in houses off-campus or in apartments on South Campus, this won’t be too difficult. But for those of us still living in a dorm, you might feel a bit restricted as to where you can host. Don’t fear—use those dorm lounges! Your floor lounges and entire dorm lounges are there for you, so put them to use! As a first-year or even a sophomore, finding places to host all your friends doesn’t have to be difficult.

Setting the Vibe

Dinner essentials, decor and ambiance doesn’t have to be complicated. Dollar Tree is the perfect (and cheap) spot to get some cute Thanksgiving-themed cutlery or decorations. Grab some paper plates, plastic knives and forks, a table cloth and whatever else your heart desires! If you want to take it up a notch, Target is also a great option for some cute, affordable decor. Don’t waste your money on things you’ll use once and throw away!

Additionally, curate a playlist with your fall faves—such an easy way to set the tone. Adding some fall vibes doesn’t have to be complicated, so keep it cheap and simple!

Finding an Affordable Feast

Not breaking the bank is the key here—Aldi’s $40 feast that feeds 10 is perfect for your Friendsgiving needs. Split it 10 ways and that’s only $4 a person! Plus, you can always have an extra side or dessert if need be. This option is great for someone that has a kitchen available.

However, if you’re doing this dorm-style, you’re going to want to find pre-made, microwavable dishes. Try getting some sliced pre-cooked turkey breast, pre-made mac and cheese and mashed potatoes, and some frozen vegetables. Aldi is still a great option to snag these items without breaking the bank. The food doesn’t have to be glamorous! It’s all about enjoying a delicious, stress-free meal with friends.

Remember To Be Thankful

We can’t forget the most important part: giving thanks! Go around the table or the room and say what you’re thankful for. Or if you want to get crafty and have a throwback to kindergarten, grab some markers and paper—we’re making hand turkeys! Trace the outline of your hand and fill in the features of a turkey. Then, write five things you’re grateful for on each finger/turkey feather. Remembering to be grateful on Thanksgiving is key (and you’re never too old for a hand turkey).

Whether you’re staying in Syracuse for Thanksgiving or just want to show some gratitude to your friends before break, hosting a Friendsgiving celebration doesn’t have to be complicated. Above all, appreciate each other’s company and practice gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving, Syracuse!

Written By Mirren Grimason ’29, S.I.
