The convenience and luxury provided in these dorms cannot be understated; with 14 different living styles amongst the dorms, six dining halls, laundry facilities in each building, residential staff on every floor and security at the front of each building. All this is to say, living in a dorm provides great ease and allows students to focus on being students, which is beneficial, especially to first-years who are adapting to the independence of college life; however, the apartment-style living offered on South Campus truly helps students transition from just being students, to being adults.

South Campus, about a mile away from main campus, is home to six unique neighborhoods (housing approximately 2,500 students), the Goldstein Student Center, the Inn Complete, the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, the John A. Lally Athletics Complex and so much more! South Campus provides students with much more freedom and allows residents to try their hands at adulthood.

I would say the most surprising change I experienced was going from being in student mode 24/7 in my dorm to having a balance between my work and home life in my apartment; living on campus surrounded by my classmates in packed residence halls made me feel constantly surrounded by Syracuse. I was grateful to have a community, but you truly are always a college student when you’re always relying on college amenities.

I wanted to combat that by better preparing myself for adulthood and allowing a separation between the space I would be working hard and the space I wanted to reserve for relaxation and idleness. The same way people say it’s good for your brain chemistry to not be studying in bed or doom-scrolling at your desk, compartmentalizing where you work and rest can be very important for productivity.

Even living just a mile away, the 15-minute trolley ride helps to separate being on campus and doing my academics from being in my apartment and making time, not only for household chores, but also for myself. I can decorate my apartment to what suits my taste, grocery shop and cook for myself, park my car right outside my door (for a reduced fee), and take a step away from the hustle and bustle of having everything condensed to a centralized location that can often be overwhelming.

This is not to say South Campus has no support system; in fact, each neighborhood is a community within itself. However, unlike sharing a single room with another person, you could very well have an entire apartment for yourself: your own (or, at the very most, shared with two people) bathroom, living room, kitchen and individual bedroom. This makes your living space almost completely customizable, but still furnished with the necessities. Goldstein Student Center has laundry, dining and eating facilities, much like a dorm would provide, for those who still enjoy having that support provided by the University.

The average day for me living on South Campus involves waking up and starting the day by getting ready entirely in my own space. Instead of a dining center, I make my own breakfast in my kitchen, which has helped me have more control over my diet and improve my cooking skills. Then I head out to one of the conveniently located trolley stops and take the short ride to College Place. After a long day of classes and organization meetings, it’s just that same short ride home to make dinner and relax in my living room!

Last year, I would’ve spent my day constantly surrounded by people, relying on the amenities at my immediate disposal, but South Campus allows me to slow down and have my own space, all while keeping me surrounded by a safe, student-populated community that helps make the transition between dorm and independent living feel much more comfortable.

Written By Dan Tiwari ’28, S.I.
