February is Black History Month (BHM)<\/a>, and the campus community is invited to celebrate Black history, culture and traditions through a series of programs and events coordinated by Multicultural Affairs<\/a> and the Black History Month Planning Committee, as well as student organizations and campus partners. This year\u2019s BHM theme is \u201cBlack Resistance: Building Bridges and Navigating Barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am looking forward to all the Black History Month events because it is a great way for Black students on campus to be able to connect with each other and learn about our history and progress,\u201d shares Ashley Bruce \u201923, a student on the BHM Planning Committee. \u201cIt\u2019s also another great way to support our community through events that educate and inspire us.\u201d Check out some BHM 2023 event highlights below!<\/p>\n

Trap N Paint<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Join Multicultural Affairs and Orange After Dark<\/a> for Trap N Paint! Enjoy a night filled with music you can dance to while expressing your artistic skills on something you can take with home with you. A complimentary \u201cart piece\u201d will be provided to attendees by the host of the event, illustrator and dollmaker Jaleel Campbell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trap N Paint is on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 9 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium. A valid Syracuse University I.D. is required to attend.<\/p>\n

Celebrating Black Excellence Gala<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Celebrate all things Black Excellence at this formal celebration gala featuring a special musical guest, a live band and an R&B\/hip-hop violinist. The gala will also extend recognition to individuals doing great work within the Syracuse University community.<\/p>\n

The Black Excellence Gala is Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium. Tickets are free and will be available through the Student Box Office<\/a> for Syracuse University students, faculty and staff starting mid-February.<\/p>\n

BHM: Breaking Stigma \u2013 Mental Health Matters<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Join Multicultural Affairs and the Student Association<\/a> for a panel discussion to increase accessibility and awareness on mental health in Black communities. Panelists Simone Adams, Dr. Charmain Jackman and Douglas McNeil Reed will create dialogue between the definitions and experiences of mental health and wellness, as well as discuss what that looks like in the community. You can catch this special event on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. in the First Floor Atrium of Schine Student Center.<\/p>\n
