As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.syracuse.edu\/events\/2021-feb-22\/the-racial-equity-academic-symposium\/?_ga=2.127386765.1400052516.1614003812-155427108.1613406374\">Racial Equity Academic Symposium<\/a> and Syracuse University\u2019s Black History Month Celebration, Anderson will be receiving the 2021 Poetic Icon Award, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/nikki-giovanni.com\/\">Nikki Giovanni<\/a>, from the Office of Multicultural Affairs\u2019 spoken-word program, <a href=\"https:\/\/ese.syr.edu\/multicultural\/programs\/verbal-blend\/\">Verbal Blend<\/a>. Get to know Keisha!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2015\" src=\"https:\/\/experience.syracuse.edu\/the-peel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/mg_1204.jpg\" alt=\"Keisha-Gaye Anderson\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Go Orange! <\/strong>Keisha-Gaye Anderson is a Class of 1996 alumna! She graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author, Poet, Educator.\u00a0 <\/strong>Her debut poetry collections \u201cGathering the Waters\u201d was accepted into the Poets House Library and the National Library of Jamaica. Keisha\u2019s\u00a0poetry, fiction and essays have been widely published in national literary journals, magazines and anthologies. She also regularly teaches English courses at The City University of New York and leads writing workshops for non-profits and other organizations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A visual artist.<\/strong> Keisha was selected as a Brooklyn Public Library Artist in Residence in 2018. Her visual art has been featured in exhibitions and literary journals, including \u201cThe Adirondack Review,\u201d \u201cJoint Literary Magazine\u201d and \u201cNo, Dear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Journalistic roots.<\/strong> Keisha began her career as a journalist, having written for national consumer magazines like \u201cPsychology Today,\u201d \u201cTeen People,\u201d \u201cBlack Enterprise\u201d and \u201cHoney.\u201d She also began her career working in various producing roles on documentary programming for networks like CBS and PBS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An award-winner.<\/strong> Her third poetry collection, \u201cA Spell for Living,\u201d received the Editors\u2019 Choice recognition for the Numinous Orisons, Luminous Origin Literary Award, and is as a multimedia e-book, including music and Keisha\u2019s original artwork. Keisha is a past participant of the VONA Voices and Callaloo writing workshops, a former fellow of the North Country Institute for Writers of Color and was short-listed for the Small Axe Literary Competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Written by Alana Boyd G\u201921 S.I.
