As the campus community celebrates Black History Month and the contribution of Black culture, art and literature in our society, we take a moment to recognize the talents and contributions of our own students of color. Enjoy Verbal Blend<\/a> Poet Anne Fernandez’s ’22 works entitled “Dominicana” and “Stuck in Between.”<\/p>\n

“Dominicana”<\/strong><\/p>\n

In high school I coined the term Afro-Latina
\nNot knowing what it meant growing up
\nThinking it was only for Black Latinos
\nBut Honey these spirals in my hair
\nMy Black Dominican grandmother
\nThat don\u2019t come from white descendants
\nAlthough if you were to ask her if she\u2019s black
\nMy abuela with eyes and skin as brown as sweet Dominican coffee
\nWould straight up say, \u201cclaro que no, esta loca?\u201d
\nSee if I\u2019m being honest
\nIn the Dominican Republic
\nPassing as white is seen as a privilege
\nIn that way you don\u2019t have to be mistaken for an Haitiano
\nThe greatest insult before being mistaken for a Puerto Rican
\nProud of our culture
\nBut not enough<\/p>\n

“Stuck in Between”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everytime I try and explain myself
\nI can\u2019t
\nCan\u2019t because I get stuck between the conjugations
\nLa palabras of mi y t\u00fa
\nOr is it usted?
\nI feel like I\u2019m on a rocky bridge
\nConstantly trying to balance itself between Spanish and English
\nA frog leaping from a lily pad of ums to yo no s\u00e9
\nYo no s\u00e9 como explicarte que yo estoy pensando
\nMe toqeo y me frustro cuando no s\u00e9 como decir una palabra
\nI know this in English but how the hell do I translate it to Spanish?
\nOdio que no lo puedo hablar suavemente como ustedes
\nLo hablo apaso
\nCada segundo pensando en como lo voy a decir
\nI feel like my parents don\u2019t understand my quirkiness because it\u2019s rooted in English
\nA language they have yet to learn
\nTheir tongue in a sword battle with the letter \u201ce\u201d
\nEverytime they want to say a word that starts with an \u201cs\u201d
\n\u201cE\u201d school
\n\u201cE\u201d strawberry<\/p>\n
