If you think a student would benefit from comprehensive case management services, complete the case management <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?SyracuseUniv&amp;layout_id=500\">online referral form<\/a> and a case manager will reach out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"frequently-asked-questions\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n<div role=\"region\" class=\"accordion\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            What are signs a student may be in distress?            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p>Although the terms \u2018concerning\u2019 and \u2018worrisome\u2019 are subjective, the following list of indicators provides some context when assessing whether a student may need additional support:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"s:academic-indicators\">Academic Indicators<span class=\"anchor\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent unexplained absences.<\/li>\n<li>Deterioration in quality\/quantity of work.<\/li>\n<li>Extreme disorganization or erratic performance.<\/li>\n<li>Written or artistic expressions of unusual violence, morbidity, social isolation, despair or confusion.<\/li>\n<li>Continual seeking of special permission (extensions, make-up work).<\/li>\n<li>Patterns of perfectionism.<\/li>\n<li>Disproportionate response to grades or other evaluations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"s:emotional-indicators\">Emotional Indicators<span class=\"anchor\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct statements indicating distress.<\/li>\n<li>Significant change in mood.<\/li>\n<li>Angry or hostile outbursts, yelling or aggressive comments.<\/li>\n<li>More withdrawn or more animated than usual.<\/li>\n<li>Appears over-anxious.<\/li>\n<li>Excessively demanding or dependent behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Fails to respond to outreach from staff\/faculty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"s:physical-indicators\">Physical Indicators<span class=\"anchor\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Deterioration in physical appearance or personal hygiene.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive fatigue, exhaustion.<\/li>\n<li>Erratic or disjointed thinking \u2013 skips around a lot; unable to stay focused on one topic; topics don\u2019t align.<\/li>\n<li>Noticeable cuts, bruises, burns.<\/li>\n<li>Frequent or chronic illness.<\/li>\n<li>Disorganized speech, rapid or slurred speech; confusion.<\/li>\n<li>Substance abuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"s:other-factors-to-consider\">Other factors to consider<span class=\"anchor\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Concern expressed by another student or teaching assistant.<\/li>\n<li>Student is experiencing substantial and prolonged financial or legal problems.<\/li>\n<li>A sixth sense or hunch that something is wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Why make a referral?            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p><span>Syracuse University community members are strongly encouraged to report student behaviors that they feel are concerning or worrisome, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.<\/span><span>\u00a0Early identification of a concern means being proactive, providing outreach and resources to students, and promoting a community of care for our campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Early intervention means rapid solutions:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Often, a quick response to provide a distressed student with timely resources will ensure that the student remains successful academically. \u00a0Late intervention often involves missed classes, isolation from friends and family, possible withdrawals or late drops and an overall interruption in the student\u2019s experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connecting the Dots<\/strong>: Our office receives reports from all over campus. Our ability to connect your concerns with the concerns of others means we are able to provide a greater level of support for each student involved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We Care, You Care<\/strong>: Making a referral shows that you care enough to get the student the help they need. It means you are not prepared to let a student fall through the cracks. Case managers will acknowledge that your referral is received within 24 hours or the next business day.
