Our organization was founded by 13 visionaries that sought to revolutionize society for the prosperity of Latinos, and humanity as a whole. Realizing strength in numbers and the power of uniformed voice, La Unidad Latina\u2019s primary objective was to address the inadequacies of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the necessities of minority students to succeed in higher education. Since that glorious day in 1982, we have successfully created a formal structure for the positive presence of underrepresented groups at institutions of higher learning across the nation. La Hermandad function socially in a unique and positive manner, providing an atmosphere in which each Hermano can be himself and share his experiences. Most notably, in creating a sentiment of family, every Hermano has a place that he can truly call home, and a place where he will be respected and supported in all endeavors. La Unidad Latina continually redefines the concept of brotherhood. Since 1987, the Hermandad has been an outlet for professional development and personal growth to both its members and serving constituents. The sorority\u2019s impact can be seen in the outstanding accomplishments of our Hermanas, the young women being mentored enrolled in our LADYS and PEARLS Programs, and through the lives of people touched by our many initiatives\u2014proof that women of color can make a difference. Though our sorority is Latina-based, Sigma Lambda Upsilon is not Latina-exclusive.
