Card Services<\/a> and Residential Living, are dedicated to supporting students before and returning from studying abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing to Study Abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span>When planning and preparing to study abroad, students are encouraged to plan and take action early. It&#8217;s important to understand the differing needs that a fall semester vs. a spring semester abroad may present. Questions for students to reflect upon include but are not limited to the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div role=\"region\" class=\"accordion\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Before leaving or when returning from studying abroad, will I need a space to live?            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <ul>\n<li>If abroad for a fall semester, students may need living accommodations for the spring semester after they return.<\/li>\n<li>If traveling abroad in a spring semester, students may need living accommodations for the fall semester prior to going abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            As a student, is it my responsibility to confirm living accommodations for the semester in which I will be in Syracuse?            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p><span>Yes, students are responsible for confirming and taking action to reserve\/lease any needed living accommodations for the semester in which they are not studying abroad. Campus staff in\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/suabroad.syr.edu\/\">Syracuse Abroad<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/housingmealplans.syr.edu\/\">Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services<\/a>\u00a0and Residential Living, are here to help navigate the process.<\/span><\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            I&#039;ve confirmed that I will need a place to live the semester before or after returning from studying abroad. First-year and second-year undergraduate students must live on campus, unless a prior exemption has been granted.<\/span><\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Living On-Campus and Studying Abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n<div role=\"region\" class=\"accordion\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            If I plan to study abroad in the spring semester, how do I cancel my on campus spring housing assignment?            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <ul>\n<li>Students seeking to live on campus the fall semester before they study abroad in the spring semester are asked to participate in the Academic Year Room Selection Process.<\/li>\n<li>Students living on-campus who are studying abroad for the spring semester may cancel their on-campus housing assignment to pursue a study abroad experience. Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services emails (@syr.edu) eligible students sharing instructions on how to cancel their housing assignment, cancel meal plans and vacate their housing assignment at the end of the fall semester.<\/li>\n<li>For questions and to learn more, please<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/housingmealplans.syr.edu\/about-us\/contact-us\/\">contact Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services will email (@syr.edu) eligible students sharing a different application for students to complete and express interest in a spring semester only housing assignment. The spring semester application is made available in October.<\/li>\n<li>Upon completion of the form, students will receive notice via email (@syr.edu) if they have received a spring semester housing assignment. For example, what will happen to the leased space when away for a semester? Does the lease permit the student to sublet the unit while away or are they responsible for paying the lease even when studying abroad? Before signing, students are encouraged to review the lease to learn if subletting is an option. Students may wish to consult an attorney prior to signing. Students should never attempt to draft the terms of a sublease themselves.
