Course Enrollment

First-Year Course Selection and Registration Information

One of the most exciting parts of your Becoming Orange journey is to get registered for classes for the first time! While this process may seem stressful, each School and College has worked with the Office of the Registrar to remove the stress from this process and have streamlined it to be consistent and equitable. Please note, failure to submit your Immunization Form (Required Task) may hinder the ability to view your schedule.

Additional details will be sent throughout the summer. To avoid missing important information, students are asked to check their Syracuse University email account (i.e., @syr.edu) often.

Using a NetID and password in addition to the following instructions, students may access class registration on MySlice.

  1. Students will receive an email communication (i.e. @syr.edu) from their school or college with specific instructions on how to complete the class registration process, including a student-specific link to a Qualtrics survey to complete.
  2. Most incoming students are required to take placement exams. Students should refer to their Qualtrics survey for details on which exams they are required to take. Take applicable placement exams by the deadline. Learn more about placement exams today!
  3. Complete the Qualtrics survey by the deadline. Do not share this link as it is meant to be accessed only by the student it was sent to.
  4. During the summer (June/July), your school or college advising office will use the information provided in the Qualtrics survey and your placement exam results to build a class schedule. You will automatically be registered for required first semester classes.
  5. Depending on major, you may have an opportunity to register for liberal arts classes to complete your schedule in early August. More information will be shared with students in July. Please note that some majors may not allow for additional classes to be selected.

If you have questions or concerns about this process, please contact your school or college advising office. After August 29, 2022, if you have questions or need assistance with MySlice registration pages, please email the Office of the Registrar or call 315.443.2422.

Please review the appropriate deadlines to complete the Qualtrics survey and any necessary placement exams.

If you are admitted after the class registration deadline, or if there are issues with your schedule, students have the opportunity to register and meet with an advisor during Syracuse Welcome.

Please refer to the Syracuse Welcome schedule for the exact date, time and location of each school's or college's meeting.

Placement Exams

Before registering for classes, some schools and colleges, depending on your program, will require a Mathematics Placement Exam. If you are taking a foreign language course, you may need to take a Foreign Language Placement Exam. All students whose dominant language is not English must take the English Language Placement Exam.

  • Review the Qualtrics survey sent by the student's school or college. The survey will indicate which, if any, placement exams are needed.
  • Using your NetID and password, log in to MySlice.
  • Select the “Advising"  tile and then the “Placement Exam” link on the left.
  • Complete necessary exams. Please note that each exam should be completed in one sitting, so allow some time to complete it without interruption.

If you have questions or issues accessing the Placement Exams, please email Information Technology Services (ITS) or call 315.443.2677.

All students whose dominant language is not English must take the English Language Placement Exam. The purpose of the exam is to place students into an appropriate sequence of ENL/WRT courses for completing undergraduate writing requirements.

        • Please register by Monday, June 6, 2022, EDT.
        • For students planning to attend Syracuse University in Fall 2022, you will be able to register for one of two exams taking place on Thursday, June 9, 2022, EDT or Saturday, June 11, 2022, EDT.
        • Please allow at most two hours to complete the exam. Students may take the exam at any time during the day of their chosen date.
        • After completing the registration form, students will be emailed (i.e. @syr.edu) on how to access the exam a few days prior to the exam.

For additional information or for questions, please contact an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) coordinator, email Matthew Hammill, Ph.D., email Youmie Kim, Ph.D. or call 315.443.9484.

In advance of testing, students who will require placement exam accommodations are asked to please email the Center for Disability Resources or call 315.443.4498.
