Academic Training may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With or without wages;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the course of studies; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After completion of the course of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate and Master\u2019s Degree Seeking Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate and graduate students at the master\u2019s degree level are eligible for <strong>up to 18 months of Academic Training<\/strong>, but they may never be approved for Academic Training for <strong>longer than the length of the academic program<\/strong>. In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your program of study is longer than 18 months, you may have up to 18 months of Academic Training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your program of study is nine months, you may have up to nine months of Academic Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no distinction between full-time and part-time Academic Training. Whether a student works part-time or full-time, a day of authorized Academic Training is counted as a day of Academic Training.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ph.D. Degree Seeking Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctoral (Ph.D.) students are eligible for <strong>up to 36 months (three years) of Academic Training<\/strong>, but they may never be approved for Academic Training for <strong>longer than the length of the academic program<\/strong>. In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it takes you more than three years to complete your Ph.D., you may have up to 36 months (three years) of Academic Training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it takes you two years to complete your Ph.D. you may have up to two years of Academic Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no distinction between full-time and part-time Academic Training. Whether a student works part-time or full-time, a day of authorized Academic Training is counted as a day of Academic Training.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applying for J-1 Academic Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>J-1 students whose DS-2019s <strong>were not<\/strong> issued by Syracuse University must contact their J-1 Program Sponsor (Fulbright, IIE, USAID, etc.) for instructions on eligibility and procedures for Academic Training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-1 students whose DS-2019s <strong>were<\/strong> issued by Syracuse University will need to complete the following steps to apply for J-1 Academic Training. Please note, the Academic Training application must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Filed before the end date of the academic program of study (which may be earlier than the end date on the DS-2019).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approved in advance of the Training start date (which must be within 30 days of the end date of the academic program of study).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div role=\"region\" class=\"accordion\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Step 1: Obtain an Academic Training Opportunity            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p><span>Secure an Academic Training opportunity in your field of study. Obtain a letter from your Academic Training employer\/organization confirming the opportunity, dates and salary\/wage, if any.<\/span><\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Step 2: Obtain an Academic Training Recommendation Letter From Your Academic Department            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p>Your academic department must recommend you for Academic Training in a letter, written on departmental letterhead. This letter must include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The date of completion of the student\u2019s degree.<\/li>\n<li>Goals and objectives for the training program.<\/li>\n<li>A description of the training program, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Academic Training site name.<\/li>\n<li>Academic Training site address.<\/li>\n<li>Academic Training supervisor&#8217;s name.<\/li>\n<li>Academic Training supervisor&#8217;s phone number.<\/li>\n<li>Academic Training supervisor&#8217;s email.<\/li>\n<li>Number of hours of work per week.<\/li>\n<li>Dates of the training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How the training relates to the student\u2019s major field of study.<\/li>\n<li>Why it is an integral part of the student\u2019s academic program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Step 3: Obtain Proof of Your Financial Support (If Academic Training Is Unpaid)            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <p>If your Academic Training is unpaid or your salary\/wage does not meet your<span>\u00a0<\/span>estimated expenses,<span>\u00a0<\/span>you will need to provide proof of financial support for you and your dependents for the duration of your Academic Training.<\/p>\n<p>Financial support may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal funds.<\/li>\n<li>Family funds.<\/li>\n<li>Syracuse University scholarship or assistantship.<\/li>\n<li>Government scholarship\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Financial support documents may\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bank statement (must be a recent statement, less than six months old).<\/li>\n<li>Support letter from a financial sponsor and proof of their ability to provide funding.<\/li>\n<li>Scholarship and\/or assistantship award letter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n      <div class=\"accordion-item border border-gray-light\">\n      <div class=\"accordion-header-text\">\n        <h3 class=\"margin-bottom-0\">\n          <button class=\"accordion-header full-width background-gray-light-30 border-0 margin-0 padding-top-2 padding-bottom-2 padding-left-3 padding-right-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            Step 4: Complete the Academic Training Request in the International Student and Scholar Portal            <div class='accordion-toggle icon-right' class=''>\n              <i class='icon-chevron-right'><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n          <\/button>\n        <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class='accordion-content'>\n        <ol>\n<li>Log in to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/syr-isss.terradotta.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">International Student and Scholar (ISSS) Portal<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>through MySlice. If you do not have access to the Portal, please<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"mailto:\/\/international@syr.edu\">email the Center for International Services<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>with a detailed description of the issue (include screenshots if possible) or visit the Center for International Services during <a href=\"https:\/\/experience.syracuse.edu\/intercultural-collective\/about\/locations-and-hours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drop-in advising<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Student Request Center.<\/li>\n<li>Find the Academic Training Request.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the questionnaire.<\/li>\n<li>Upload the required documents:\n<ol>\n<li>Academic Department Recommendation Letter<\/li>\n<li>Letter from Academic Training Employer\/Organization<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-94 Arrival Record<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-94 Travel History<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Proof of Financial Support (if required)<\/li>\n<li>Proof of Health Insurance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Submit request.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once your request is submitted, an advisor will review your request and contact you if any clarification is needed. Within 3-5 business days of submitting your request, you will receive an email indicating that your DS-2019 authorizing Academic Training is available for pick-up from our office.
