Please check back early in the fall semester for updated application deadlines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mark and Pearle Clements Internship Awards provide financial support to Syracuse University students who have created distinctive, self-initiated internship opportunities taking place over the Summer 2026 term. These awards make it possible for students to pursue meaningful, hands-on experiences that would otherwise be financially out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clements interns typically spend the summer working under the guidance of an experienced professional, applying what they\u2019ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings that align with their career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Clements Award is open to Syracuse University students in the following categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Syracuse University juniors, seniors and master\u2019s degree students of all majors are eligible to apply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United States work authorization is required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students returning for summer or graduate studies at Syracuse University in the Summer or Fall of 2026,&nbsp; are eligible to apply.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important Note for Graduating Seniors:<\/strong> Undergraduate seniors who are graduating in the spring, must be accepted into a graduate program. Students will also be required to register for at least 1 graduate credit in the summer term immediately following graduation. Registration for summer courses must be completed prior to the internship start date.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clements Awards typically range from $1,500 to $6,000. There are usually several awards made in the spring semester of each year. The award may be used to pay for internship-related travel, accommodations, living expenses, and required materials, but may not, in most cases, be used to pay for salaries, stipends, tuition for Syracuse University required courses, or major equipment\/technology that will become the possession of the applicant at the conclusion of the internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/syr.joinhandshake.com\/edu\/jobs\/10383951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Please submit your application via Handshake<\/a>. Each academic year the application period is hosted from Nov. 12-Feb. 11, 11:55 p.m. (EST). Submissions will be reviewed mid to late spring semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants are responsible for developing and obtaining their own\u00a0internships\u00a0and should make preliminary contact with a representative of the proposed\u00a0internship\u00a0employer (to the extent possible) before submitting the application for a Clements\u00a0Internship\u00a0Award. No money will be released to successful applicants until final employer confirmation of the\u00a0internship\u00a0position has been received by the coordinator of the\u00a0award\u00a0process, but an applicant does NOT need to have final confirmation of the position before submitting the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applicants must submit the following:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Application Information: <\/strong>Completed and with identifying details related to you and to your proposed internship site via Handshake Experiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Internship Proposal: <\/strong>In a detailed paragraph include the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Describe the purpose and goals of the proposed\u00a0internship and how it relates to your education and career objectives. This section should describe the rationale behind the proposal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The statement must contain carefully considered learning goals. The goals should describe what you plan to learn, to achieve, and to accomplish through participation in the internship. It is important to build a strong case for the proposed internship, since competition for these\u00a0awards will be keen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When formulating the learning goals, applicants may wish to consider the following questions:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why do I want to participate in this\u00a0internship?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do I want to learn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do I want to learn about a specific field or a specific aspect of that field?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Describe the activities to be undertaken\/supervision to be received, structure of the internship and specific activities, tasks and projects you hope to undertake or already know.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Current Resume<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Faculty or Staff Sponsor Letter: <\/strong>This letter will confirm support from your Syracuse University faculty or staff sponsor. Your sponsor should have familiarity with your work, character, career interests, and be able to speak to your ability to learn in the internship setting. The letter of support should contain the sponsor\u2019s views on the significance of the proposed internship\u00a0to your academic program and career interests.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faculty Sponsorship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each Clements\u00a0Award\u00a0application must have the support of a Syracuse University faculty member who agrees that the proposal complements the student\u2019s academic program, and that they are willing to act as an academic \u201csponsor\u201d of the proposed\u00a0internship. A sponsor must have knowledge and expertise in the subject area of the proposed\u00a0internship\u00a0but is not obligated to monitor the\u00a0internship\u00a0unless it is to be granted academic credit through Syracuse University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Award Policies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students may only win an award once.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clements Awards typically range from $1,500 to $6,000. The specific application of this policy depends on whether the\u00a0internship\u00a0is credit-bearing and whether the students are enrolled in any other coursework.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span>If the internship is not credit-bearing and the student is not enrolled in any other summer coursework:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0funding\u00a0received for the\u00a0internship\u00a0will count as Estimated Financial Aid (EFA) for the Fall 2026 term. This means that when these students enroll for the Fall 2026 term, the aid they received during the non-enrollment period will be factored into their estimated financial aid for that term.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If the student is enrolled in any other summer coursework:<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0funding\u00a0received for the\u00a0internship\u00a0will count as EFA for their summer term. Clements Awards may not be applied to tuition costs, so the cost of receiving credit for a summer internship when the student is not officially enrolled, must be assumed by the student through other means. While candidates should try to research expenses for budget estimates, the selection committee retains some discretion in the setting of a specific monetary award. Students should be aware that costs of internships done for credit may be covered by their tuition for a given semester. On rare occasions, winners\u2019 internships have not materialized and they have been able to substitute another internship if the committee receives its details and approves the change. One of the main factors in the determination of winners is how much freedom the applicant had to cultivate specific and unique settings within their overall fields of interest. Many fields and roles consider candidates from various academic areas as long as applicants have the requisite skills and demonstrate a knowledge of the field sufficient for credibility. The Clements Awards are meant to help students meet the expenses that their own resources cannot.
