Alexis James HeadshotTherapeutic Style: I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Tele-Mental Health Provider. My therapeutic style integrates Solution-Focused Therapy, Supportive Therapy and Brief Psychodynamic Therapy. My clinical approach focuses on empowering students and offering support to help them navigate their world. My goal as a therapist is to find solutions that work on an individual basis. Although there may not be quick-fix solutions, I believe we can work together to face the challenges you may be experiencing.

Professional Interests: My areas of professional interest include working with the Black community to demystify and de-stigmatize the field of mental health. I am passionate about normalizing discussions around mental health in underserved communities. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, stress management and addressing relational concerns. I also enjoy providing support and training opportunities for clinicians-in-training and participating in clinical development, ensuring I stay abreast with the ever-growing research in the field.

Group and Liaison Roles: I will be co-facilitating a Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) Students: Releasing the Individual Weight support group for graduate students.

Educational Background: I grew up in the Syracuse community and am a proud Fowler High School (now Public Services Leadership Academy at Fowler) alumni. I received a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in school psychology and classical music from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. I received a master’s degree in community mental health counseling from Canisius College as well. After completing my educational studies, I relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where I worked for seven years with diverse populations in community mental health organizations, in an inpatient psychiatric hospital and in private practice. I am excited to be back home in Syracuse and honored to join an amazing and diverse team of clinicians at the Barnes Center at The Arch.
